On Dec. 29, 2020, University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and Nebraska Medicine announced participation in a clinical trial to test the safety and effectiveness of an investigational COVID-19 vaccine for adults. The medical center planned to enroll up to 1,000 people for the clinical trial.

The investigational vaccine used for this clinical trial was developed by Novavax a U.S. biotechnology company, which planned to enroll 30,000 adults in the U.S. and Mexico.
