In 1996, the University of Maryland Cancer Center was renamed Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center.

In 1996, Baltimore-based real estate developer Stewart Greenebaum and his wife, Marlene, made a $10 million gift to the University of Maryland Medical System and the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The largest private contribution ever made to the School or Hospital.

The mission of the UMGCC is to conduct innovative basic and clinical research that will impact the understanding and treatment of cancer around the world and to provide state-of-the-art clinical care to cancer patients in Maryland and beyond.
