In 1982, University of Iowa otolaryngologists were the first in the U.S. to implant a multichannel cochlear implant. The implants were a breakthrough compared to the single-channel implants that were being tested in the United States at the time.

In 1985, the Iowa Cochlear Implant Center was founded. Today, the University of Iowa is a world leader in cochlear implant research and development.
