On May 21, 2016, the Whittemore Peterson Institute for Neuro-Immune Disease (WPI) opened its doors. The Institute’s origins lay with a group of dedicated citizens and clinicians who proposed the concept of a medical institute in Sep. 2004 to provide help for the millions who suffer from the disorders known as myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS), fibromyalgia, and other closely related illnesses.

In 2005, the Nevada Legislature unanimously approved a joint project between WPI, University of Nevada School of Medicine, and the Nevada Cancer Institute. Built within the Center for Molecular Medicine on the University of Nevada campus, WPI is a state-of-the-art translational research facility that exists to bring discovery, knowledge, and effective treatments to patients with illnesses that are caused by acquired dysregulation of both the immune system and the nervous system, often resulting in lifelong disease and disability.
