On Jan. 23, 2004, the U.S. Congress enacted the Sun Grant Research Initiative Act. The Sun Grant Research program is a national network of land-grant universities and federally funded laboratories working together to further establish a biobased economy.

The U.S. Departments of Transportation, Energy, and Agriculture partnered in the initiative.
