In 1965, the rubella virus was attenuated by a NIH research team lead by Paul Parkman and Harry Meyer, Jr. The vaccine was tested at the Children’s Colony in Conway, Arkansas in 1965 while a rubella epidemic spread across the U.S.
In Jun. 1969, the NIH issued the first license for commercial production of the rubella vaccine to the pharmaceutical company Merck Sharp & Dohme.
