In 1988, the American Chemical Society awarded the Priestley Medal to Frank H. Westheimer ‘for his numerous contributions to chemistry,” the Society’s most prestigious award.

Westheimer was the first physical organic chemist to do serious studies of biochemical reactions and is considered a founder in the field of bio-organic chemistry.
