In 1916, the National Research Council (NRC) was created under the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) charter by executive order of President Woodrow Wilson, which extended the scope of the NAS in its advisory role.

the NRC’s mission is to improve government decision making and public policy, increase public understanding, and promote the acquisition and dissemination of knowledge in matters involving science, engineering, technology, and health.
