The Medical Society of South Carolina was founded

On Dec. 24, 1789, the Medical Society of South Carolina was founded in Charleston on Christmas Eve by a small group of private physicians to “improve the Science of Medicine, promoting liberality in the Profession, and Harmony amongst the Practitioners in this City.”

Through our partnership with the Roper St. Francis Healthcare System, they direct resources to support health and wellness-related charitable programs and organizations within the tri-county area.

Through epidemics of yellow fever, cholera and small pox. Through war, earthquake, hurricanes and the great Charleston fire. Through HMOs, managed care and re-imagined healthcare systems. What has remained constant is the Medical Society of South Carolina’s resolve to pioneer, provide and protect the health of our community’s people.
