The Medical College of the State of South Carolina became a state institution
In 1913, the South Carolina General Assembly approved state ownership of the College, appropriating the grand sum of $10,000. The City of Charleston subsequently raised $75,000 to construct a new building, which cemented the College’s future.
The General assembly action was a result of the Flexner report, published three years earlier in Medical Education in the United States and Canada, that found the Medical College, despite its tradition and dignity, was sorely lacking in facilities, faculty, equipment, and money.
