The Influenza Commission discussed the possibility of a general closure
On Oct. 14, 1918, the Illinois Influenza Advisory Commission invited representatives from professional organizations, the Red Cross, clubs and trade organizations, federal and state officials, and the Liberty Loan committee to meet at the upscale Hotel Sherman, a well known night spot for celebrities, jazz musicians, and Chicago’s high society set, to discuss the possibility of issuing a general closure order.
The Advisory Commission handed down its final decision: beginning on Tuesday Oct. 15, all theaters, movie houses, and night schools were to close immediately for an indefinite period, and all lodge meetings and other similar gatherings were prohibited.
