in May 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed into law a bill that established the Foundation for the Advancement of Military Medicine, a private, not-for-profit organization.

Five months later, the Foundation was named in honor of the late Sen. Henry M. ‘Scoop ‘Jackson, who sponsored the legislation that led to its founding.
