In 1884, the first live attenuated viral vaccine (rabies) was developed by Louis Pasteur, using dessicated brain tissue inactivated with formaldehyde. The method involved inoculation with homogenates of RABV-infected rabbit spinal cord that had been desiccated progressively in sterile air.
