In 1952, the first edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) was published and quickly became the main reference tool for the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness in the United States
The DSM offered a common language for these disorders and standard criteria for their classification, mentioned autism only to describe symptoms of schizophrenia before puberty.
