In 2013, the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders merged three of the four subcategories of possible autistic disorder listed in the fourth edition into a single diagnosis, and eliminated the fourth subcategory.
The diagnosis was renamed autism spectrum disorder, or ASD.
