The Chikungunya virus was first recognized and isolated in southern Tanzania

In 1952, the Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) was first recognized and isolated from Makonde Plateau in southern Tanzania. Chikungunya is a mosquito-borne virus infection transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes of the genus Aedes The word ムchikungunyaメ originates from Makonde language referring to the bending stance in afflicted patients due to musculoskeletal pain.
