On Jan. 12, 2010, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) responded to the 7.0 magnitude Haiti earthquake to prevent 7,000 deaths from cholera.

Because surveillance and laboratory system investments for outbreak-prone disease were established by the Haitian Ministry of Health in collaboration with CDC following the earthquake, health officials were able to rapidly identify cholera.
