In 1962, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) performed the first Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) investigation for chronic disease with a leukemia cluster. Today, the EIS has trained over 3,800 ready-responders who have served a gamut of public health issues since the programﾒs inception in 1951.
