In 1999, Michael Smith, recipient of the 1993 Nobel Prize in Chemistry, founded Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Science Centre in Vancouver.

Canada’s Michael Smith Genome Sciences Centre (GSC) at BC Cancer has since worked with local, national and international partners on the Human Genome Project, on many cancer projects and on reference genomes for a diversity of species. In 2003, we were the first in the world to sequence the genome of the SARS coronavirus.
