In 1996, the Nobel Laureate in Chemistry was awarded jointly to Rice University professors Richard Smalley, Robert Curl and Harold Kroto of the University of Sussex in Brighton, England for their discovery of fullerenes (buckminsterfullerenes).
These “carbon cages” resembling soccer balls opened up a whole new field of chemical study with practical applications in materials science, electronics, and nanotechnology that researchers are only beginning to uncover.
