Steamer Virginia arrived in New York, its passengers riddled with cholera and ordered quarantined
On April 18, 1866, the steamer Virginia arrived in New York from Liverpool, its passengers riddled with cholera. Discovering that 35 steerage passengers and two crew had died during the voyage, the city’s health officer ordered a swift quarantine.
This and other strict quarantines undertaken during the epidemic proved successful in limiting deaths to about 600, a small number compared to previous outbreaks.
