Saccharin Study and Labeling Act passed by Congress to stop FDA from banning the chemical sweetener
On Nov. 23, 1977, the Saccharin Study and Labeling Act was enacted by the U.S. Congress to stop the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) from banning the chemical sweetener but requiring a label warning that it has been found to cause cancer in laboratory animals.
This legislation was an extension of the Food Additives Amendment that called for the study of a possible link between saccharin consumption and cancer.
