Reuben Ottenberg performed the first blood transfusion using blood typing and cross-matching
In 1908, Mount Sinai’s Reuben Ottenberg first published mention of using blood test for compatibility before human blood transfusion.
He was the first to note that human blood groups are inherited, according to Mendel’s Law. He also showed that Group O blood could be given to Group A and B patients, establishing the concept of the ‘Universal Donor.’
