Report published in Nature detailed transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in free-ranging white-tailed deer in the U.S.
On Jul. 10, 2023, a report published in the journal Nature detailed frequent spillovers of SARS-CoV-2 from humans to white-tailed deer in the U.S. Overall, these results suggested the SARS-CoV-2 viruses in white-tailed deer originated from at least 109 independent direct or indirect spillover events from humans, with 106 involving within-state human SARS-CoV-2 sequences and three involving out-state human SARS-CoV-2 sequences. These spillovers were detected across multiple states, involving multiple genetic lineages, including the Alpha, Gamma, Delta, and Omicron variants.
