Provident Hospital, the first non-segregated hospital in the U.S., was founded
In 1893, Provident Hospital, the first non-segregated hospital in the U.S, was founded in Chicago by Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, an African-American cardiologist and the first person to successfully perform an open heart surgery. Provident Hospital is now part of Cook County’s Bureau of Health Services.
