On Jan. 1, 1970, President Richard Nixon signed the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) into law and launched the environmental decade of the 1970’s.

The bill, sponsored by Senator Henry M. “Scoop” Jackson from Washington State, formed the Council on Environmental Quality to advise the President on the environment and review federal agencies’ Environmental Impact Statements, required for projects that would affect the environment.
