In 1962, the birth of the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) in Mexico was an experiment in applying the idea of international agricultural research for development and the ideals for designing international research program. The experiences of CIMMYT and IRRI laid the basis for the rapid expansion of international agricultural research.
