In 1955, physician and researcher Edmund Keeney became director of the Scripps Metabolic Clinic after Sherrillﾒs death.

That same year, a West Annex is completed in downtown La Jolla to house divisions of gastroenterology, allergy, and clinical immunology. Within the next few years, a number of new divisions are added.
