In 1971, Paul Berg of Stanford University spliced the DNA of viruses into the first recombinant molecules. Bergメs landmark gene-splicing experiment involved splicing a bit of the DNA of the bacterial virus known as lambda into the DNA of simian virus SV40, whose natural host is the monkey.
