On Sept. 11, 2018, the National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a three year $1 million grant to scientists at Emory and Georgia Tech. as well as Northwestern and the University of Chicago, to decode neural networks using machine learning.

The goal was understand how networks of neurons work together to perceive the world and to generate the control signals needed to produce coordinated movement. Their project was titled “Discovering dynamics in massive-scale neural datasets using machine learning.”
