In 1901, the first Nobel Prize for Physiology and Medicine was awarded to Emil von Behring for his work on the development of a diphtheria antitoxin (later known as antiserum).
In 1900, Emil von Behring had introduced serum from immune horses as a method to cure and prevent diphtheria.
