NCI’s Cancer Trends Progress Report announced 2023 Incidence and Mortality Data

On Sep. 3, 2024, the National Cancer Institute (NCI) announced that the latest Cancer Trends Progress Report included updated incidence and mortality data. Cancer is the second most common cause of death in the United States (exceeded only by heart disease), accounting for nearly one in every four deaths.

The incidence of some cancers, including leukemia, myeloma (cancer of plasma cells), melanoma of the skin, thyroid, liver, oral cavity and pharynx, pancreas, uterus, kidney, and female breast, has continued to increase.
