National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month was founded
On Feb. 29. 2000, President Clinton officially dedicated March as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month. Since then, it has grown to be a rallying point for the colon cancer community. Estimates showed that physicians diagnosed approximately 130,000 new cases of colorectal cancer in the year 2000, and, of those persons diagnosed, more than 56,000 will die from the disease. Colorectal cancer takes such a deadly toll because it usually has no identifiable symptoms and often goes undetected until it is too late to treat.
