Lyme disease was first recognized in the U.S.
In 1975, Lyme disease, an inflammatory disease caused by Gram-negative spirochetal bacteria and spread through a tick bite, was first recognized in the U.S. following an investigation of a cluster of arthritis cases among children living near Lyme, Connecticut.
The bacterium that causes Lyme disease was named Borrelia burgdorferi in honor of Dr. Wilhelm Burgdorfer who in 1981 identified the cause of Lyme disease.
