In 1990, the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill received National Cancer Institute (NCI) comprehensive cancer center designation. The Lineberger Center received NCI-designation in 1975.

The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center was named for the Lineberger family of Belmont, NC – pioneers in the textile industry with a long, distinguished association with the University.
