Late blight ravaged Ireland’s potato crop
In late 1845 and 1846, a summer blight ravaged Ireland’s potato crop. It is estimated that more than a million Irish died during the potato famine.
The cause of the blight was a fungus that had traveled from Mexico to Ireland. Over the next decade, more than 750,000 Irish died and another 2 million left their homeland for Great Britain, Canada, and the U.S.
