Innis Steinmetz was the first woman to enter the Medical College of Virginia

In 1918, Innis Steinmetz, became the first woman to enter the medical school, and 30 years later, the college admitted its first black student, Jean Harris who graduated with honors from Virginia Union University.

Harris became the first African American student admitted to the School of Medicine at the Medical College of Virginia. In 1978, Governor John Dalton appointed her Secretary of Human Resources.
