HHS directed $1 billion toward development of vaccine for novel influenza A (H1N1)

On May 22, 2009, the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services (HHS) directed $1 billion toward development of vaccine for novel influenza A (H1N1).

The 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic was the first human pandemic in over four decades, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimated that there were as many as 89 million U.S. cases.
