In 1636, Harvard University, the oldest institution of higher learning in the U.S., was founded by a vote of the Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.

The University was named for the college’s first benefactor, John Harvard a minister from Charlestown when. Upon his death in 1638, Harvard left half his estate to the institution.
