On Mar. 5, 1947, ground was broken for the new University of Washington’s Health Sciences Building. The new facility was dedicated Oct. 9, 1949.

Renamed the Magnuson Health Sciences Center in 1978 in honor of Senator Warren G. Magnuson, the complex consists of more than 20 wings, with nearly 5.8 million square feet of floor space — making it one of the largest buildings in the U.S.

The Seattle golfing community was a bit sad because the school was being built on the grounds of the University Golf Course, a sweet, nine-hole layout that for 3 1/2 decades hugged more than half a mile of Portage Bay and the Montlake Cut.
