In 1840, German scientist Dr. Jacob von Heine conducted the first systematic investigation of polio and developed the theory that the disease may be contagious.

Polio (Poliomyelitis) was often known as Heine-Medin disease, named after the work of Heine and Karl Oskar Medin.
