Gene synthesizing machines were developed
In May 1981, Applied Biosystems was founded by Hewlett Packard engineers Sam Eletr, their first CEO, and Andre Marion based on technology developed by Leroy Hood and Marvin H. Caruthers.
The first commercial synthesizer was placed in Caruthers lab in Dec. 1982, and the company began shipping the instruments in 1983.
