In 1977, Eugene Goldwasser published Purification of Human Erythropoietin (EPO) in the Journal of Biological Chemistry. Goldwasser spent 25 years working on the purification of erythropoietin. He eventually succeeded by using a 7-step purification procedure on 2550 liters of urine collected from people with aplastic anemia. His final yield was 8 mg.
