Edward Francis extended the earlier observations on tularemia

In 1919, Edward Francis extended the earlier observations on tularemia. His other studies, continued into the 1920s, clarified the nature of the agent, its distribution in animals, the role of ticks and deer flies as vectors and the routes of infection in man.

The bacterium was later named Francisella tularensis in his honor.
