Dr. James McCune Smith became the first African American to hold a medical degree
In 1837, Dr. James McCune Smith became the first African American to hold a medical degree. Smith, a leading abolitionist, graduated at the top in his class at the University of Glasgow, Scotland, and was the first African American to run a pharmacy in the U.S.
In 1852, Smith was invited as a founding member of the New York Statistics Society.
