Dr Hans Neurath became the first UW School of Medicine faculty member elected to the National Academy of Sciences
On Apr. 25, 1961, Biochemist Dr. Hans Neurath became the first University of Washington School of Medicine faculty member elected to the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Neurath founded the UW’s Department of Biochemistry, and served as its chair from 1950 to 1975, upon his retirement. Three of the faculty members who worked in Dr. Neurathメs department were awarded Nobel Prizes in physiology and medicine.
Dr. Neurath was among the first to apply modern physical and chemical techniques in examining the composition and function of proteins. Dr. Neurath served as scientific director of the German Cancer Research Center from 1980-83, and returned to the UW as professor emeritus. During his six decades of teaching and researching, he published more than 400 scientific papers, and edited three volumes of モThe Proteins,ヤ a standard reference source published by Academic Press.
