Dr. Alexander Augusta became the first African American commissioned medical officer in the U.S. Army
In Apr. 1863, Dr. Alexander Thomas Augusta became the first African American commissioned medical officer in the United States Army when he was appointed surgeon with the Union Army.
He was surgeon-in-charge at the Contraband Hospital in Washington, D.C. became the Howard University Hospital in 1975.
