In 1918, geneticist Donald Jones invents the double-cross (the crossing of two single crosses) that moves hybrid corn from the lab into farmers’ fields.

The use of this system of crossing male hybrid corn was commercially feasible. The first commercial double-cross hybrid, Burr-Leaming, was released and recommended by the Connecticut station in 1921.
