On Sept. 8, 1960, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) new permanent headquarters opened in Atlanta, Georgia. The CDC was founded in 1946, as the successor to the Malaria Control in War Areas program.

In 1947, the CDC made a token payment of $10 to Emory University for 15 acres of land on Clifton Road in DeKalb County, still the home of CDC headquarters. Robert W. Woodruff, chair of the board of The Coca-Cola Company had arranged the transaction.The City of Atlanta annexed the CDC headquarters effective January 1, 2018.
