CDC reported human infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza A(H5N1) virus in Texas

On Apr. 5, 2024, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that Texas had reported a human infection with highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) A(H5N1) virus (H5N1 bird flu) after confirmation by CDC. This was the first time this virus had been found in a cow and the second human case of H5N1 bird flu reported in the United States. There was a previous case in 2022 in Colorado in a poultry worker.
